Distribution:
Banks of rivers and stream throughout Central and South India.
Description:
A large deciduous tree with smooth grey bark. It prefers banks of streams. It is propagated from seed. Bark used as a tonic and to heel wounds.
Wood Properties:
Heartwood sharply differentiated from the sapwood. Sapwood pinkish-white to pinkish-grey or pale grey; heartwood walnut brown to deep brown sometimes with darker streaks giving a handsome figure; moderately hard and heavy, straight to somewhat interlocked-grained, coarse-textured.
Durability:
Moderately durable with an average life of 119 months. A moderately refractory wood to season, somewhat liable to warping and splitting. The sapwood is very perishable and should not be used untreated.
Uses:
House-building, carts, shafts, axles, naves of wheels, agricultural implements, well- construction, boats, oars, masts, brush-back.
