Distribution:
Central and Southern India, chiefly in deciduous forest, extending north to the hills of Behar, Banda, to the Kumaon Terai, low country of Ceylon.
Description:
A large deciduous tree. Bark grey with long vertical cracks, exfoliating in small pieces of irregular shape and size.
Wood Properties:
Wood very hard, close-grained, giving a red resin: sapwood small; heartwood yellowish-brown, with darker streaks. The heartwood is full of resin and stains yellow when damp.
Durability:
The wood is durable, seasons well and takes a fine polish.
Uses:
House building (posts, beams, doors, window- frames) furniture, agricultural implements, railway wagons, carts, shafts, axles, yokes, naves, spokes, felloes, boat building, oars, drums, combs, toys, cooper's work, paving blocks.
